Buffalo Bills
I have heard both the Mills Bros and the Buffalo Bills show on Phil
DeBars HUMAN VOICE show. I have never heard a finer piece of work than
those two pieces. Congratulations on a SUPER effort. Would it be
possible to obtain copies of these 2 shows. I would love to work them
into the Monterey Peninsula Chapters program. We are getting a few new
members and I cannot think of a better way to present some our history
and the basis that our hobby was built on. In fact I am sure a number
of the old timers could benefit from hearing these shows. If these
shows are available, please let me know to get them. Thanks Grady and
keep up the great work.

I just finished listening to your presentation of the
Buffalo Bills and it brought back so many memories. You've done an
outstanding job of capturing the essence of what the Buffalo Bills
meant to so many of us. I've been a Barbershopper since 1962 and the
first album that I bought was by this great quartet.
Thank you for the memories and for all that you do for our society and
our great SWD and I look forward to your next "Great Quartet"
Richard Wolfe - Houston Tidelanders
I thoroughly enjoyed your program on the Buffalo
Bills. I heard it on KDHX. I am an avid barbershopper and I'm always
looking for anything that will promote our music. I am anxiously
waiting for your next installment.
Since I am a St. Louisan, and proud member of the Ambassadors of
Harmony chorus, I need to tell you that my favorite quartet is the 1993
International Champions, the Gas House Gang, located right here in St.
Charles. I hope that this quartet makes it into your program.
Thanks again,
Steve Merritt
I played the Mills Brothers show on KKUP's
"Human Voice Show" on Aug 12, 03.
Great Quartets is a wonderful series that
always makes the phones at KKUP light up. Its professional production
qualities and rare LP cuts of seminal vocal groups such as The Buffalo
Bills and The Mills Brothers make it a must-listen! I can't wait for
the next edition!!
KKUP-FM Cupertino, CA, broadcasts to Alameda, Santa Clara/Silicon
Valley, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties on 91.5 FM. It is a
community-based public radio station.

Mills Brothers
I have just been listening to your release on the Mills Bros, what a
wonderful piece, looking forward to hearing more.

I'm an occasional listener of Encore, and
always enjoy your selections.
Just heard the 32-minute Great Quartet special on the Mills Brothers.
WOW!!
That's really great music.
Thank You,
Jim in Moraga, California (Near San Francisco)
I just listened to your superb program about
the Mills Brothers. It is very interesting and informative, and thank
you for producing it with such scholarship and skill.
I found it by amazing coincidence: I have just been asked to sub for
the baritone of a quartet called 'Fine Blend'; we are based in
Yorkshire in England, but the baritone has been ordered to quit singing
for a while by his doctor. Anyway, Fine Blend have a website which is
part of the Barbershop webring. Having gone to the Fine Blend site
(www.fineblendquartet.co.uk) to see what I don't know in the
repertoire, I decided to have a cruise around the webring. After a few
other sites, up came Great Quartets. It just happens that Fine Blend
sing the 'Mills Brothers Medley' arrangement, which I have heard many
times but never had occasion to learn. I never knew who the Mills
Brothers were, let alone what they did; so it was great to stumble
across your program. I will be suggesting that all the other members of
the quartet listen to it as well, so we know what the arrangement is
celebrating, and hopefully this will influence the way we sing it.
Thanks again. I look forward to listening to the Buffalo Bills program,
and future ones you produce.

I just happened to tune into your tribute to
the Mills Brothers on Live 365's "Encore 2001" station. It really did
bring a tear to my eyes as I listened to some of the greatest vocal
music ever recorded by one of the greatest vocal groups. I didn't
discover the Mills Brothers really until 1967 when I heard "Cab Driver"
while away at college. Though only 18 at the time I loved them more
than the Beatles, Beach Boys or any other group of that era.
Whenever we pass through Piqua, Ohio on return visits to Mich., I
always ask the family, "What is Piqua famous for?" The answer they all
know is "Its the home of the Mills Brothers!"
After 30 years, I appreciate them even more for the beauty of their
harmony, the lyrical content, and their talent and character.
Thanks so much for this show. Is there any way of purchasing a CD of
it? I have a number of their recordings but I would like your narrative
of their story.
Sincerely,
Tom Riley - Lexington, KY

We have really enjoyed this great recording. It
brought me some tears on songs like "Paper Doll" (reminders of my Mom)
and "You Always Hurt the One You Love" (hubby had a few tears too, he
would not admit it, but I saw him wiping eyes--lol). My sister will
love it.
We had lots of smile from many songs like "Daddy's Little Girl" and
"Cab Driver".
I really thank you for all the nice memories. You made my day."

Yes, I played the Mills Brothers show the week I got
it - on Friday, August 1 at 8 a.m. as part of my weekly show.
Another wonderful show. The Mills Brothers are long-time favorites of
mine, so I really enjoying HEARING the program as well as being able to
play it on my show.
Thanks again for including me in the mailing list for your Great
Quartets series. I look forward to hearing the next one!

Suntones
What a super job you did. I know I echo the rest of the Tones in saying
"thanks a mill" for choosing us and we deeply appreciate what you're
doing and the hard work behind it.
Bill Cain – Bass - Suntones
I'm listening to your wonderful
tribute to the Suntones. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I had the privilege of having Harlan Wilson as my director for the
Royal Palm Sweet Adelines chorus in the early 90's. He was so dynamic
and inspiring (not to mention swooningly handsome)! I also have the
good fortune to know Bob Franklin -- a fantastic individual -- through
my husband.
Harlan brought the Suntones together one year to perform on our annual
show and I was astounded at what I heard. Harlan was always modest and
I wasn't aware of the reputation and widespread fame of his quartet.
You've done an outstanding job of
capturing the talent and pure showmanship of this great quartet. Keep
up the valuable work you are doing.
Sincerely,
Debbie Shapiro Boca Raton, FL
Just finished listening to the shows and was
thrilled to say the least. Going back in my barbershop history, living
in New Jersey in the 50's I was able to see and hear the Bills.
My wife and I hosted the Suntones after they
won and we have remained close friends for many years. Moved to Florida
in 1970, sang briefly with the Miamians, and our children grew up
together.
I must really be getting old. Your show brought
tears to my eyes.
Your "solute" to them is wonderful. I only hope
many people get the opportunity to hear it.
Can't wait for your next bio.
Sincerely
Joe Sherman
A short note to wish you a Happy New Year and
to let you know how much I've enjoyed the radio programs.
The Buffalo Bills and Suntones brought back
many memories from my earliest barbershop days.
The Mills Brothers, however, brought about
tears aplenty. Explanation: My Mother and her two sisters
were singing on local radio W. H. A. S. at the time and auditioned in
Cincinnati W. L. W. with The Mills Brothers. While they
didn't perform together My Moms trio did a bimonthly 15 minute shot on
W. L. W. for about a year. I was about 5 or 6 at the time, but
remember it well.
Finally, your script
and delivery were both excellent....Thanks again.
With a Song'
